Potato Day

Last Friday we harvested our Russett potatoes and Red Pontiacs from the farm. We had a sensational first day at the farm and the children literally shouted out with joy at each and every potato dug out of the ground! During group time we sorted the potatoes and everyone had a guess as to how many we had of each variety.

The guesses were as follows:
Russett Potatoes- the range was from 8-100 The actual number was 28.
Pontiac Potatoes -the range was from 6-100 million 2 hundreds (this is NOT a typo). Actual number was 53.

We found it so interesting to listen to their estimates. Some children were very close to the number and yet some were so far from the actual. There is a lot to learn about how children process quantities and numbers-an inquiry for us teachers! A discussion was had about what to do with the potatoes and we voted on making the first batch into mashed potatoes.

Monday: Mashed Potato Day

Every single child tried them and only one child did not like them. Samples of comments:

Matias: Yes, I like it!
Jordyn: I want more.
Kahlen: No, I don't like it.
Makena: No, it's yucky. Now I like it. My tummy now says it is yummy!
Joban: I don't like it but then I do like it.
Sebastian: I want more. I love it!
Koltyn: I like them.
Connor: I love it, I want more.
Jack: That is so yummy.
Grace: Very good.

All in all a very successful first day of cooking and eating!

Sebas was very detailed explaining the cooking process. He also said the teachers were fishing at the farm. I am still puzzled.

I love reading the blog updates so I can stay in touch with everything the kids are doing. Jack is loving every minute of pre-school and I love that he loved the mashed potatoes. One more thing to add to his very short list of things her will eat. You rock!

MWF 4 Hour Class When I’m writing a documentation, one of the hardest things for me is to decide what pictures, stories and reflections I’ll share with you. There are so many joyful, meaningful moments and every day’s learning experiences! As I was selecting some of the class’ photos I found myself wondering: if we consider the classroom’s environment, the third teacher, what is mother nature’s role in a child’s learning and development? The exploration of natural environments nurture children’s curiosity and holistic learning as much, or even more, than a classroom. Some of the benefit of connecting children with nature include: supporting creativity and problem solving, increasing physical activity, reducing stress, promoting social emotional development. We see children as innate scientists, artists, builders… full of wonders and curiosity they can nourish and experiment while they are playing in nature. 3 and 4 Year Old Classes – Holiday Time

The preschool 3 and 4 year old morning classes have been busy preparing for the holidays over the past few weeks. Along with many other activities, each child has made a gift for their families. These gifts are now wrapped and ready to be sent home, and we are sure they will be well received! We also showed the children our Preschool Donation Box and spoke about the importance of giving to those who are less fortunate than us. We have decorated a Christmas tree and created two very large snowman (which will be on display at the family potluck!) It was fun to stand back and watch the children strategize and work together as a team. The preschoolers have also been practising the songs they will sing at the family potluck and for the Hugh Boyd Seniors. In the coming week they will be decorating a gingerbread cookie with their big buddy - this always makes for a fun day! Inspirational Paintings     ...
